Art is about discovery for me. I have always known since childhood I would be an artist. In 1983 left my little apartment in NYC and traveled to small French village where I was vacationing and purchased a set of brushes and some oil paints. Painting was something I that had always planned to peruse. My first exhibit was held in a small Medieval Church after weeks of discovering that I loved what I was doing. That is where my passion for painting began. I continue to paint in my home studio in northern California. I started painting in the Old Master style about 10 years ago. I like the high contrast use of light with the realist style. The abstract paintings and mono prints come from a love of color. They lead me ask more questions than I can answer.
I worked and lived NYC in the fashion industry as a clothing and accessory designer, fashion stylist, and make up artist for 14 years. Fashion still fascinates me because of the cyclical nature of the art. Old things return as new but with a timely twist. My first quilt was made of the tops of wool berets which were left over from my accessory line. I cut and stitched them into an oversized graphic pattern to form a blanket which I still use today. From that moment on I saw quilting not necessarily as just a traditional art form but a chance to discover ways to use fabric to make art. I love working with non traditional fabrics in traditional ways or visa versa. Color is a strong component of all my work. I consider myself a painter that quilts. Quilting to me is the challenge of taking multiple prints, colors, textures and giving them a unique order of their own and coming up with art.
I continue to take classes in painting like the old masters with Jody Mattison. My paintings and quilts and have been sold and exhibited in the Bay Area, New York City, Hawaii and of course France. My current day job is freelance sketch artist for the footwear industry and a mother of 2 very creative teenagers.
